KEMPSHOTT HISTORY GROUP
The fourth meeting of the Kempshott History Group held at the Village Hall on 6th May proved to be a very lively affair. First we had an update on the progress of various projects which our members are researching followed by tea and biscuits.
One of our group then read out an account from a lady who was born and brought up in Kempshott giving her memories of life and people living here in the 1940’s and 1950’s. This sparked off many comments from our members and prompted more recollections as we chatted in small groups with a note taker in each. This was great fun and has resulted in a great deal of information from the 1930’s to the present day which left those of us taking notes scribbling furiously to keep up with the volume of reminiscences. We now need to collate this to present to the next meeting which we hope will prompt even more memories.
With long time residents’ memories, old pictures and maps we are now starting to build a picture of early Kempshott and the life of people living here then which we hope eventually to publish or put on the internet.
If anyone has any memories, photos, pictures or any other documentation about the history of Kempshott Village we would be very pleased to welcome you with tea and biscuits at Kempshott Village Hall on Friday 1st July when we meet at 2.30pm.
Some of us who are more recent arrivals in Kempshott but have a keen interest in history are also exploring other aspects of the history of the area: Down Grange in the 19th century, for example, and Basingstoke’s Racecourse (yes, it was right here).
If you are unable to attend but feel you would like to pass on your memories or if you would like to learn more about the group please contact us on 01256 352776 or 01256 470171.
